A round table dedicated to the restoration of mountain ecosystems was convened in Bishkek on December 15 by the Special Representative of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Nurlan Aitmurzaev, with support from the OSCE program office in the city, the president’s press service reported. The event focused on the occasion of International Mountain Day, recognized globally on December 11.
The United Nations General Assembly declared December 11 as the International Day of the Mountains in 2002. This day aims to raise awareness about the significance of mountains for life on Earth, draw attention to the advantages and challenges related to the development of mountainous areas, and foster collaborative efforts to improve the lives and habitats of mountain communities worldwide.
Kyrgyz Republic President Sadyr Japarov further emphasized the importance of mountain regions by signing a decree designating the years 2023–2027 as a five-year period for the development of mining regions. During his address at the UN General Assembly, Japarov urged active participation in the global action plan for this period. The Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic has prepared the concept and roadmap for the five-year development plan for mountain regions (2023-2027), which received approval by order of the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Akylbek Zhaparov.
The round table saw participation from representatives of the diplomatic corps, international organizations, state and scientific bodies, participants of the COP-28 of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and civil society representatives.
Speakers and reports at the event delved into key issues related to the mountain agenda, emphasizing the importance of commitment to the implementation of the Kyrgyz Republic's mountain agenda at the global, regional, and national levels. Topics ranged from forestry and adaptive strategies for climate change to food security, public health, and the cultivation and utilization of medicinal herbs in mountainous regions.
Under the auspices of the "Mountain Partnership" of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO, Rome), an exhibition showcasing achievements, medicinal herbs, and organic agricultural products from Kyrgyzstan's regions was organized.
The round table aligns with global and national initiatives and reflects President Sadyr Japarov's efforts to draw attention to the preservation of mountain ecosystems and mobilize resources for the sustainable development of mining regions. This event marks a significant stride in consolidating the country's endeavors to address the unique challenges and opportunities associated with the sustainable development of mountainous areas.
