A conference fostering a high-level dialogue between Uzbekistan and Italy, organized by the Institute for Strategic and Regional Studies under the President of Uzbekistan (ISRS) and the Mediterranean Institute for Asia and Africa, commenced in Tashkent. The event, "Uzbekistan – Italy: New Horizons of Cooperation," marked a significant step in deepening diplomatic ties, the National Information Agency of Uzbekistan reported.
In his welcoming address, ISRS First Deputy Director Akramjon Nematov provided a detailed analysis of Uzbekistan-Italy relations, highlighting the potential for enhanced cooperation. Nematov emphasized the constructive political dialogue established between the two nations, reaching unprecedented heights this year due to the leaders' amicable and trusting relationship.
Nematov noted the growing interest in learning the Italian language in Uzbekistan, signaling the importance of teacher training and the gradual introduction of Italian as a second foreign language in schools.
Expressing gratitude to Italy for supporting Uzbekistan's initiatives in Central Asia and regional security, Nematov highlighted Italy's role as the first EU country to launch the "5+1" dialogue format with Central Asia, addressing the specific challenges and internal development issues of the five Central Asian states.
Uzbekistan and Italy's Cooperative Endeavors
The strong collaboration between Uzbekistan and Italy extends to international platforms such as the United Nations and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Italy actively supports Uzbekistan's efforts to promote a partnership-oriented, neighborly, and trusting atmosphere in Central Asia, advocating for the continued development of the "Italy-Central Asia" cooperation format.
Institutional mechanisms for coordinating bilateral cooperation have been successfully established, including regular political consultations and the operation of the Intergovernmental Working Group on Trade, Economic, and Industrial Cooperation and Export Credits.
Recent bilateral talks between President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan and President Sergio Mattarella of Italy underscored the commitment to expanding strategic partnerships and multilateral relations. The leaders highlighted the success of agreements made during President Mirziyoyev's visit to Italy, emphasizing a 30% increase in the exchange of goods and joint projects totaling €9 billion, particularly boosting economic cooperation.
