In a significant development, the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, Uzbekistan's upper house of parliament, convened its forty-seventh plenary session to deliberate and subsequently endorse crucial laws related to agreements between Uzbekistan and the Republic of Italy. The focus of these agreements encompassed extradition, the transfer of prisoners, and mutual legal assistance in criminal cases.
One of the key inquiries during the session came from Senator Talibjon Madumarov, who sought clarification on the impact of ratifying the Agreement on the transfer of prisoners between Uzbekistan and Italy, particularly concerning Uzbek citizens currently serving sentences in Italian penal institutions.
An official from the Prosecutor General's Office responded to this query, shedding light on the current status of Uzbek citizens in Italian prisons.
"Today about 20 citizens of Uzbekistan are serving sentences in Italian prisons,"
the official revealed. Furthermore, the official emphasized that diplomatic missions actively monitor the situations of these citizens.
The official underscored the positive implications of the ratified agreements on Uzbek citizens incarcerated in Italy. The agreements provide these individuals with a significant option—to continue serving their sentences in Uzbekistan. This newfound choice not only grants prisoners agency but also serves to foster comfort for both the incarcerated individuals and their families.
The flexibility offered by the ratified agreements becomes evident as prisoners have the right to decide where to serve their sentence. This option is anticipated to be instrumental in maintaining family relations, as regular meetings become more feasible. Additionally, the official highlighted that this flexibility contributes to the social rehabilitation of these individuals.
The official from the General Prosecutor's Office articulated the broader significance of these ratified agreements. Beyond the individual cases, the agreements are expected to bolster Uzbekistan's international reputation. The official stated,
"It will have a positive effect on Uzbekistan's international reputation. The reason is that the principle of 'Uzbekistan will not abandon its citizens' is applied in practice."
The session also saw the Senate approving an agreement on alliance relations between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, further solidifying diplomatic ties in the Central Asian region.
