During a meeting of the intergovernmental Turkmen-Turkish commission on economic cooperation in Ashgabat, the possibilities of supplying Turkmen natural gas to the Turkish market were discussed.
"The relevance of the project of gas supplies from Turkmenistan to Turkey through the territory of Iran was emphasized," local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports. Turkey's delegation was headed by Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz.
It was noted at the meeting that the national gas transportation infrastructure created in recent years offers Turkmenistan ample opportunities to export its natural gas in large volumes to the west.
"The parties agreed to start negotiations at the level of heads of relevant agencies and companies in the near future."
Experts told Daryo that one of the sources of raw materials for exports is Galkynysh, the world's largest onshore gas field with reserves of 27.4tn cubic meters.
Turkmenistan has been supplying gas to Azerbaijan via Iran since early 2022 on a reimbursable basis (swap) under a trilateral open-ended agreement.
These operations help provide natural gas to Iranian provinces such as Rezavi, North and South Khorasan, Golestan and Semnan, which are remote from national gas resources. Iran receives Turkmen gas at its border and supplies similar volumes to Azerbaijan from its own fields.
Iraq, which is negotiating with Iran to deliver up to 9bn cubic metres of Turkmen gas per year, wants to use a similar scheme.
Turkmenistan supplies gas directly to China, Russia and Uzbekistan.
