In a stride towards environmental conservation and sustainable forestry practices, an agreement has been reached between Uzbekistan and the United Nations Forum on Forestry and Greening (UNFF). The pivotal meeting took place between Aziz Abduhakimov, the Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change of Uzbekistan, and Juliette Biao, Assistant Secretary-General of the UN and Director of the Secretariat of the Forum on Forestry and Greening.
The discussions at the meeting focused on the ongoing "Green Space" national project in Uzbekistan, particularly the ambitious initiative to create saxophone groves covering almost 2 mn hectares in the arid expanse of the Aral Sea's dry basin.
The collaboration aims to leverage the expertise of the UNFF in advancing a scientific approach to afforestation, implementing "smart" agriculture, and ensuring the sustainable management of forests in Uzbekistan. The agreement also outlines cooperation in organizing lectures, training, and seminars by highly qualified experts from the UNFF at the Central Asian University of Environmental and Climate Change Studies. This initiative seeks to enhance the capabilities of experts in the field of forestry and environmental science.
Furthermore, the UNFF will actively participate in the nationwide "Green Space" project and extend its support to the development of Uzbekistan's forestry and horticulture sector. The Assistant Secretary-General, Juliette Biao, expressed the organization's keen interest in not only aiding Uzbekistan's ecological initiatives but also in hosting specialists from the Ministry of Ecology for training.
Juliette Biao reiterated the commitment of the UNFF, established in 2000 by the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, to promote the sustainable development, conservation, and management of all types of forests. The organization is dedicated to reinforcing long-term political commitments toward environmental preservation.
