Uzbekistan has earned the 18th position among 87 countries in the latest assessment of global military power conducted by News & World Report.
The research revealed that Russia maintains its stronghold as the world's most potent military, with the United States and China following closely behind. Israel boasts the 4th strongest military, and Ukraine claims the 6th spot. The top 10 countries with the most formidable armed forces are South Korea, Iran, Great Britain, Germany, and Turkey.
The rankings identified the armed forces of Luxembourg, Singapore, and Estonia as having the least military power. This comprehensive evaluation was based on a survey of 17,200 respondents across 36 countries, employing 73 criteria derived from individual responses.
Uzbekistan has outpaced Kazakhstan by a slim margin, securing 16 and 15.8 points in military power, respectively. This marks a reversal from the previous two years, where Kazakhstan held the upper hand with scores of 25.6% and 21.5% in 2021 and 12.6% and 10.8% in 2022.
The United States maintained its second-place position for the third consecutive year in 2021, scoring 97.4%, trailing China at 97.6%. Ukraine exhibited substantial growth in military power, achieving a score of 73.6% in 2023, a significant improvement from 65.6% in 2022 and a remarkable leap from 38.6% in 2021.
When considering military expenditures, Kazakhstan emerges as the Central Asian leader with a budget of $1.1 bn in 2022, dwarfing Kyrgyzstan's $149.8 mn and Tajikistan's $103.5 mn. Information on Uzbekistan's military spending remains undisclosed.
Global military spending varies greatly, with Russia allocating $86.4 bn in 2022, while the United States committed $876.9 bn —nearly ten times more. China's military expenditure reached 292 billion dollars. It is noteworthy that despite these substantial figures, all three nations increased their military budgets, with the United States and China up by 8.8% and 2.1%, respectively, and Russia surging by nearly a third. Ukraine's military expenditures for 2022, as reported by SIPRI, totalled $44 bn, marking a substantial increase of 7.4 times over the previous year.
