Alexander Lukashenko, the leader of Belarus and a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, recently commented on the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing the need for both sides to engage in negotiations to bring an end to the stalemate at the frontlines of their war.
Lukashenko highlighted the profound challenges faced by both Russia and Ukraine, describing the situation as a significant deadlock. He pointed out that neither side can make substantive progress or fortify their positions, resulting in a situation where they are entrenched and at an impasse, leading to casualties among the people.
"They're there head-to-head, to the death, entrenched. People are dying," he said.
Despite ongoing Russian military activities near the heavily damaged city of Avdiivka in Donetsk, the frontline in Ukraine has seen minimal changes over the past year, even amid Kyiv's strenuous and extended offensive.
Lukashenko, whose country served as a launch site for Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, stressed the importance of addressing Ukraine's demand for Russia to withdraw from its territory through negotiations to prevent further loss of life.
He advocated for both parties to sit down at the negotiation table and reach an agreement: "As I once said: no preconditions are needed. The main thing is that the 'stop' command is given."
Ukraine's President, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, reiterated the significance of his 10-point peace plan at a meeting with more than 60 national security advisers, highlighting that it is the sole path to bring an end to the war. Zelenskiy's plan includes provisions for the restoration of Ukraine's territorial integrity.
