Hungary's latest statement regarding its opposition to Ukraine's NATO membership has stirred controversy and drawn attention. Gergely Gulyash, the head of the office of Hungary's Prime Minister, articulated this stance, as reported by Hirado.
Gulyash asserted that while the Western world extends support to Ukraine, it should also provide security guarantees to Russia. Underlining Hungary's position, he categorically stated that Ukraine should not be granted NATO membership under any circumstances.
Gulyash proposed alternative measures for ensuring long-term peace in Ukraine, emphasizing the introduction of peacekeeping forces and similar initiatives as effective means to achieve this objective. He expressed skepticism about Ukraine's ability to reclaim territories currently occupied by Russia.
Furthermore, Gulyash contended that meaningful negotiations between Ukraine and Russia necessitate the involvement of the United States. He argued that Russia does not pose a threat to Central Europe, citing the absence of "quick and spectacular results" by Russia in Ukraine over the past year and a half.
Earlier Daryo reported that following the NATO summit in Vilnius, a pledge to back Ukraine's NATO ambitions was made, with President Zelensky expressing certainty about their NATO membership.
