In January-September 2023, 42.6 thousand foreign citizens entered Uzbekistan for commercial purposes, among which the largest number is Turkmenistan - 25.5 thousand, according to the Statistics Agency under the President of Uzbekistan.
This is followed by citizens of Tajikistan - 10.4 thousand people; Afghanistan - 1.3 thousand; Turkey - 0.8 thousand; China - 0.7 thousand.
Turkmen citizens have required visas to cross the border since 1999, after Ashgabat decided to withdraw from a visa-free agreement with the CIS.
The common border with Uzbekistan is Turkmenistan's longest - 1,700 km. Some 300,000 ethnic Uzbeks live in Turkmenistan, while more than 200,000 Turkmen live in Uzbekistan. Both countries are interested in increasing cross-border trade.
