Turkmenistan's Foreign Ministry reports that its head, Rashid Mammadov, has met with the European Union's Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, in Luxembourg.
During the meeting, Turkmenistan's progress in the process of joining the World Trade Organisation (WTO) was presented. Meredov noted that the "Turkmen side highly appreciates the EU’s support in this direction."
The European Commissioner emphasized the readiness to provide technical assistance, taking into account Turkmenistan’s desire for WTO membership and the reforms being carried out in this regard..
Urpilainen also conveyed an invitation to the Turkmen delegation to the Investor Forum, which will be held in Brussels in January 2024.
Turkmenistan is the last former Soviet republic to start WTO accession negotiations. Turkmenistan would be granted accession status in February 2022.
A memorandum on Turkmenistan's foreign trade regime is currently being drafted. Experts told Daryo that Turkmenistan will need to liberalise trade by removing barriers such as import tariffs, quotas, export subsidies and dumping practices.
