Turkey's Directorate General of Migration reports that more than 1.1mn foreigners with residence permits were living in the country in October 2023, of which 102,970 were from Turkmenistan.
Turkmenistanis were second on the list after Russians (122,115). They are followed by citizens of Iraq (95,977), Iran (83,272), Syria (78,619), Azerbaijan (62,838) and Uzbekistan (52,825).
In addition, 73,317 Turkmen citizens have short-term residence permits, 11,170 have student visas and 6,159 have family visas.
Until recently, Turkmen citizens could visit Turkey without a visa (for up to 30 days). However, at the request of the Turkmen Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the visa-free regime adopted by Turkey some 15 years ago was cancelled in September 2022.
Official Ashgabat noted that this measure is "temporary" and will allow "to improve and maintain on a systematic basis the rules of stay of Turkmen citizens in the Republic of Turkey".
