A magnitude 4.9 earthquake occurred in Iran, 84 km southeast of the city of Mashhad, Khorasan-Razavi province, on 16 October 2023 at 11:09 (GMT +3:30), Volcano Discovery reports.
The epicentre was located 295km from Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan. The origin of this earthquake was at a very shallow depth of 10km. Khorasan-Razavi has a 531-km border with Turkmenistan.
The region is in a seismically dangerous zone. Studies show that the Balkhan-Caspian region and the Kopetdag mountain system separating Turkmenistan and Iran have high seismicity, which is confirmed, in particular, by destructive earthquakes: Uzun-Adin (Krasnovodsk) in 1895, Germab in 1929, Kazanjik in 1946, Balkhan in 2000.
On the night of 6 October 1948, Ashgabat experienced one of the most harmful earthquakes of the 20th century.
