Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon addressed the border situation during the fifth consultative meeting of Central Asian leaders in Dushanbe. Rahmon expressed concerns about the increased activity of various terrorist groups in neighboring Afghanistan, noting their recent attempts to breach the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border with the intention of organizing terrorist attacks in Tajikistan's capital and other regions.
Rahmon also highlighted the growing volume of drug smuggling across the border. And emphasized the need for solidarity among Central Asian countries.
"Last year, the competent authorities of our country detected about 5 tons of narcotics on the border with Afghanistan. This is 22% more than in 2021," he said about the statistics.
Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev proposed the development of an interstate program aimed at protecting and strengthening the borders of Central Asian nations. He stressed the importance of continued joint exercises to combat both traditional and emerging security threats.
Mirziyoyev also emphasized the necessity of establishing a regional forecasting and early warning system while promoting collective responses to emergency situations.
"The situation in Afghanistan remains one of the main factors directly affecting security and stability," he said.
Furthermore, Mirziyoyev highlighted the importance of maintaining continuous and open dialogue with the Afghan government and integrating Afghanistan into regional economic initiatives. Uzbekistan expressed its commitment to providing necessary assistance to the Afghan people.
