Manchester United's 23-year-old player, Antony, has delayed his return to training following allegations of domestic abuse by his former girlfriend and additional assault allegations made by another woman, BBC reported. The Brazilian forward was dropped from Brazil's squad for World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Peru, and despite denying all allegations, he has opted to address the matter before returning to training, as per an agreement with the club.
Allegations and Police Investigation
Antony is facing allegations of domestic abuse against his former girlfriend, Gabriela Cavallin, who claims he attacked her in a Manchester hotel room in January 2023. The incident reportedly involved a headbutt that resulted in a cut to her head, requiring medical treatment. Additionally, she alleges she was punched in the chest, causing damage to a silicone breast implant, necessitating corrective surgery.
Another woman, Ingrid Lana, has come forward, asserting that she hit her head when pushed against a wall by Antony at his Manchester residence in October 2022. Both Greater Manchester Police and Sao Paulo Police are investigating these claims.
Club's Statement and Mutual Decision
Manchester United acknowledged the allegations and stated that players who had not participated in international matches were due back in training on Monday. However, it was mutually agreed upon with Antony that he would delay his return until further notice to address the allegations. The club emphasized its condemnation of acts of violence and abuse, recognizing the importance of safeguarding all involved in the situation and the impact these allegations have on abuse survivors.
Antony's Response
Antony has vehemently denied all allegations and appeared on Brazilian TV to assert his innocence, stating,
"I never attacked any woman,"
and expressing confidence that "the truth will come out." He issued a statement in which he explained the mutual decision to take a period of absence, aiming to avoid distractions for his teammates and controversy for the club. Antony reaffirmed his innocence and pledged full cooperation with the police in their investigation.
Antony's absence is not being treated as a suspension by Manchester United, and he remains on full pay. The club is taking the allegations seriously and has indicated that they will continue to review the situation. Chief executive Richard Arnold, in consultation with manager Erik ten Hag, approved the decision regarding Antony's return.
