A global search has been initiated to locate one of the world's most iconic musical instruments - Paul McCartney's original Höfner bass guitar, BBC reports.
The Lost Bass Project is actively seeking information about what they consider to be "the most significant bass guitar in history."
McCartney acquired this instrument for £30 ($38) in Hamburg, Germany, back in 1961, but it mysteriously vanished eight years later. This bass guitar played a pivotal role in The Beatles' music during that period, featuring in hits like Love Me Do and She Loves You.
Heading the Höfner search project is Nick Wass, who has teamed up with two journalists to unravel what they describe as the "greatest mystery in the history of rock and roll."
Wass, who has worked closely with McCartney and authored a book on the missing Höfner 500/1 Violin Bass, revealed that the famous Beatle recently inquired about the guitar during a conversation, sparking the campaign to recover it.
The circumstances surrounding the instrument's disappearance remain unclear. It appears to have been stowed away, presumably after the Beatles completed filming for Get Back in 1969, Wass noted. "We don't have a clear understanding of its storage or who may have had access to it."
"For most people, this bass guitar is unforgettable... it's the instrument that defined the Beatles," Wass emphasized.
