On February 22, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced that they had received a total of 305 official nominations for the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, including 212 individuals and 93 organizations.
According to VOA, among the nominees are President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, and a Ukrainian group working on establishing an international tribunal for war crimes.
Other notable nominees include outspoken critics of Putin: anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny, who survived poisoning, journalist and political activist Vladimir Kara-Murza, and the pro-democracy youth movement "Spring."
It is also believed that climate activists Greta Thunberg from Sweden and Vanessa Nakate from Uganda, Iranian activist Masih Alinejad and her "My Stealthy Freedom" movement, as well as the White Helmets, are among this year's nominees.
Chinese and Hong Kong democracy activists advocating for democracy (Chow Hang-tung, Pan Lipfa, the "Uyghur Tribunal" group), Myanmar's UN ambassador Cho Mo Tun, who was fired by the junta but still holds his position, and the anti-junta coalition NUCC, along with Maggie Gobran, who aids the poor in Cairo's slums, are also believed to have been nominated.
Last year's Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the Russian human rights group Memorial, the Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties (CCL), and imprisoned Belarusian human rights defender Ales Bialiatski - a trio representing three countries at the center of the conflict in Ukraine, all of whom had criticized it.
The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize is an international peace award established in accordance with the will of Alfred Nobel and will be announced in October 2023 by the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo, Norway, and awarded on December 10, 2023.
According to the statutes of the Nobel Foundation, information about the nominations is not to be disclosed, publicly or privately, for a period of fifty years. The restriction not only concerns the nominees and nominators, but also investigations and opinions in the awarding of a prize.
