Nanami "Seven Seas" Nagura has emerged victorious at the Air Guitar World Championships held in Finland. This marks Nagura's third achievement in the field of air guitar, DW reports.
In the 28-year history of the competition, Nagura, a Japanese artist, has now become the most honored air guitar player, as declared by the organizers.
Securing the second position was Appo "the Angus" Rautio from Finland. For the initial five consecutive years of the event's inception, the representative from the host country had clinched the victory. However, Finland has since been unable to regain the top position.
Last year's champion, Kirill "Guitarantula" Blumenkrants, who now represents France but previously secured a win as a Russian participant in 2015, attained the third spot. The 2023 championship in Oulu featured a total of 18 contestants.
But what exactly are the Air Guitar Championships?
The term "air guitar" denotes the act of mimicking guitar playing without actually holding an instrument. Participants perform to music during this competition. Since its inception in 1996, the championship has taken place annually, with the exception of 2020 due to the event's suspension amid the COVID-19 pandemic. It was founded in the central Finnish city of Oulu.
Organizers conveyed in a statement that "air guitar playing is not instrumental sports or arts, nor does it require any special venues or skills, so it is accessible to all." They emphasized that regardless of gender, age, ethnic background, sexual orientation, or social status, anyone can engage with air guitar.
The organization's objective is to use air guitar as a means to "promote world peace." The Air Guitar Championships are an integral part of the broader Oulu August Festivals, encompassing a variety of cultural events.
