Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni paid a visit to the suburbs of Naples on August 31, an area deeply influenced by organized crime, and recently marred by the alleged sexual assault of two young girls.
According to Euronews, spending several hours in the Parco Verde neighborhood of Caivano, located on the outskirts of Naples, where it is suspected that two cousins, aged 11 and 12, were subjected to sexual violence by a group of peers and an adult male, Meloni pledged to bolster security and enact stringent measures against criminal activities, lawlessness, and drug trafficking.
During her visit, she held discussions with a parish priest and other local leaders, providing assurance that the abandoned and deteriorating sports complex, believed to be the location of the assaults, would undergo renovation and be operational by the spring season.
Giorgia Meloni's visit was a clear demonstration of her right-wing government's commitment to combating organized crime. The Camorra, a criminal mafia organization deeply involved in illicit activities like drug trade, holds substantial sway in Naples and its surrounding areas, some of which rank among Italy's most economically disadvantaged regions.
