Individuals who were engaged in the unauthorized gathering of artemia cysts from the Aral Sea have been apprehended, the Ministry of Ecology's press service reports.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change of Karakalpakstan, the Anti-Smuggling Department of the Customs Department, the Internal Affairs Department of Moynaq District, and the National Guard personnel from the border regions of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a swift operation was conducted along the Aral Sea's shores.
During this operation, it was identified and halted that a group of individuals was illicitly collecting and transporting 1029 kg of artemia cysts, valued at $8,564, without the necessary documentation.
The incident has revealed that the natural environment suffered material damage amounting to $5,659. Presently, authorities are initiating an investigation into the matter.
To provide context, artemia cysts inhabit the dry banks of the Aral Sea. These organisms are well-suited for thriving in environments with high levels of chlorine, sulfates, carbonates, and salinity. They find application in aquaculture, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, medicine, and cosmetics.
It has been determined that ecological authorities will allocate quotas for artemia cyst collection within the Aral Sea regions, ensuring that the utilization of these organisms remains within designated limits to prevent ecological harm.
