The U.S. Department of the Treasury has enforced sanctions against a Kazakh company for its "ties with North Korea." The Republic's Ministry of Economy responded to the sanctions imposed on Defense Engineering.
The ministry confirmed that the company is indeed included in the sanctions roster of the U.S. Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control.
"The company is registered in Astana. Presently, it is not operational, having its activities suspended since February 14, 2021. No licenses or permissions for the transportation of specialized goods were granted to this particular company."
The company's addition to the sanctions list is attributed to its owner, Ashot Mkrtychev, who is not a resident of Kazakhstan, being subject to U.S. sanctions. The ministry additionally asserts that the inclusion of the company in the sanctions list is a matter of procedure.
"This individual departed Kazakhstan's territory on March 7, 2020, and subsequent entry into the country was denied. Alongside Defense Engineering, two of his companies registered in different jurisdictions are also sanctioned. We maintain ongoing communication with Western partners. Appropriate actions will be taken against this company," the Ministry of Economy further conveyed.
Earlier, Daryo reported that the U.S. Department of the Treasury has levied sanctions on companies from Russia, Kazakhstan, and Slovakia due to their alleged affiliations with North Korea.
