In a striking demonstration of increased connectivity and tourism, over 20.5 mn people and 4.4 mn vehicles have crossed Kazakhstan's state borders during the first seven months of 2023, as per Colonel Gani Agadilov, the first deputy head of the Border Control Department of the National Security Committee's Border Service.
This surge represents a twofold increase when compared to the same period last year, a development largely attributed to the nation's expanding transport and transit capacity, the launch of new air routes, and the streamlining of visa regulations for foreign visitors.
During an August 16 briefing held by the Central Communications Service (CCS), Colonel Agadilov underscored that the average daily crossings have reached up to 190,000 individuals, among them 90,000 foreign nationals, along with 30,000 vehicles. The numbers point towards the growing allure of Kazakhstan as a key destination for both tourists and business travelers.
The successful management of this increased influx is evident in the operation of 101 checkpoints throughout the country. This network includes seven active crossings with China, eight with Kyrgyzstan, 51 with Russia, two with Turkmenistan, and 11 with Uzbekistan. Moreover, Kazakhstan boasts three sea and 19 air border crossings, further contributing to the country's accessibility and appeal.
Border security remains a top priority as the influx of individuals and goods continues. Border guards play a crucial role in upholding the integrity of the state borders, meticulously examining documents for validity, and scrutinizing the grounds for entry or exit. In addition, thorough inspections of vehicles are carried out to deter border violations and prevent the unlawful transportation of contraband such as weapons, explosives, narcotics, radioactive, and poisonous substances.
Colonel Serik Akhmetkaliyev, the First Deputy Head of the Border Protection Department, shared data highlighting the department's diligence. In the first half of the year, border control officers detected and dealt with 1,183 offenses. Notably, 324 instances involving the illegal export of foreign currency exceeding 2.8 bn tenge (approximately $6 mn) were prevented, alongside 12 attempts to illicitly import jewelry valued at over 184 mn tenge (nearly $399,000).
Furthermore, the unwavering efforts of the border control officers led to the suppression of 166 attempts to transfer weapons of various calibers and ammunition illegally across the border. Additionally, the interception of 3,335 religious books and pamphlets raised concerns about potential extremism and prompted closer scrutiny.
As Kazakhstan's border crossings continue to grow, the nation's commitment to maintaining rigorous security measures while simultaneously encouraging legitimate trade and tourism remains evident. The surge in border traffic attests to the country's expanding role as a pivotal player in the global transportation network and a burgeoning destination for visitors from around the world.
