On August 17, Kazakh Interior Minister Marat Akhmetzhanov briefed President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev with a comprehensive update on the current crime landscape in the country.
Minister Akhmetzhanov commenced the briefing by apprising President Tokayev of the advancements made in implementing the directives outlined by the president during an extended Ministry of Internal Affairs assembly on June 30. The minister's report underscored a noteworthy reduction in various criminal activities, encompassing murder, hooliganism, theft, robbery, assault, cattle rustling, and cases involving grievous bodily harm, among other offenses.
A pivotal highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the outcomes arising from the CyberPol project operating in Astana. This initiative has been designed to intensify the fight against internet-related fraud, contributing to the nation's overall security and digital vigilance.
Addressing the issue of drug-related crimes, Minister Akhmetzhanov disclosed that law enforcement agencies and specialized units have successfully confiscated a staggering 14.3 tons of narcotics since the commencement of the year. This encompassed significant seizures of heroin amounting to 71.5 kilograms, as well as 652 kilograms of synthetic drugs. The crackdown on drug-related offenses extended to the dismantling of 52 drug laboratories and the seizure of 85 tons of precursors used in the illicit drug manufacturing process.
Furthermore, the minister delved into the investigation progress concerning 37 cases linked to the activities of organized criminal groups. In addition, he informed the president about the detection and intervention in 111 crimes associated with human trafficking, emphasizing the government's commitment to curbing such heinous activities.
Highlighting measures to combat domestic violence, Minister Akhmetzhanov outlined plans to transition from a mere declarative registration approach to a more proactive, revealing form of registration. This shift is aimed at facilitating better identification and support for victims of domestic abuse.
President Tokayev, after reviewing the comprehensive report, turned his attention to the strategies employed for preventing road accidents and the process of legalizing foreign vehicles. He issued a directive to law enforcement agencies, underscoring the paramount importance of upholding the constitutional rights of all citizens. President Tokayev entrusted the Ministry with the ongoing task of enhancing law enforcement practices and ensuring the maintenance of law and order across the nation.
