The General Directorate of Migration Service Turkey reports that as of 27 July 2023, there are more than 1,2mn foreigners with residence permits in the country, of which 109,799 are from Turkmenistan.
Turkmenistan's citizens were second on the list after Russians (142,018). They are followed by citizens of Iraq (107,321), Iran (89,747), Syria (88,636), Azerbaijan (69,849) and Uzbekistan (57,428).
In addition, 80,294 Turkmenistan residents have short-term residence permits, 12,630 have student visas and 5,819 have received family visas.
Until recently, Turkmen citizens could visit Turkey (for up to 30 days) without a visa. However, at the request of Turkmenistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the visa-free regime adopted by Turkey some 15 years ago was cancelled in September 2022.
Official Ashgabat noted that this measure is "temporary" and will allow "to improve and maintain on a systematic basis the rules of stay of Turkmen citizens in the Republic of Turkey".
