Taliban authorities carried out a public flogging of a man and a woman in Ghur province of Afghanistan, Hasht-e Subh Daily reports, drawing from local sources.
The individuals were allegedly found guilty of engaging in extramarital relations, prompting the Taliban to administer lashes within a public arena. The man and woman endured a total of 39 lashes each. Additionally, the man received a one-month sentence, while the woman was sentenced to nine months.
This punitive action adheres to Afghanistan's implementation of Sharia law, under which penalties are enforced.
In 2022, the Taliban's leader, Haibatullah Akhundzada, issued a directive for the comprehensive enforcement of Islamic practices, including public executions, stonings, floggings, and amputations for theft.
In response to this edict, Taliban officials intensified their adherence to these practices. Notable instances include:
On December 14, the Taliban publicly flogged 20 individuals on charges of adultery, theft, and other offenses. Each man received between 35 to 39 lashes. Many of those punished were also given prison sentences.
On December 20, the Taliban carried out lashings on 30 individuals, including women, across two Afghan provinces. Accused of theft, adultery, and drug trafficking, they were subjected to 25 to 39 lashes.
In January, the Taliban publicly executed nine people in Kandahar province. Among them, four individuals had their hands amputated in view of the public for theft, while five others faced charges related to premarital affairs and other crimes.
