In a significant development, Uzbekistan has outlined its conditions for recognizing the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan. In a video interview with RTA, Afghanistan's national news agency, Uzbekistan's Ambassador in Kabul, Yodgor Khoja Shodmonov, stated that if the Taliban pays heed to the international community's demands, Uzbekistan and other nations will extend formal recognition.
Shodmonov announced that a high-ranking Uzbek delegation, led by Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khojeyev, is due to depart Tashkent for Kabul soon. Following their arrival, a critical meeting between the two nations' leaders will take place.
This announcement comes as international pressure mounts on the Taliban to establish an inclusive government and uphold human rights, particularly for women and ethnic minorities. It's expected that these points, among others, form the 'demands of the international community' referred to by Ambassador Shodmonov.
Uzbekistan's recognition would be a significant diplomatic win for the Taliban, as it struggles to gain international legitimacy following its swift takeover of Afghanistan last month. The upcoming high-level meeting indicates a growing political engagement between the two nations, as they navigate a new era in their bilateral relations.
