The Cotton Council's working group from Uzbekistan conducted a visit to Spain from August 1 to 4, aiming to learn from advanced research institutes and companies specializing in Spanish cotton seed production and to establish collaborative ties, "Dunyo" reports.
Throughout the visit, the group engaged with prominent Spanish entities such as Eurosemillas, Dafisa, and Valenzuela y Cia, recognized for their expertise in innovative seed production. These meetings included an introduction to cotton varieties developed by Spanish firms, designed to withstand extreme temperatures and drought conditions.
In collaboration with their Spanish counterparts, Uzbekistan's Scientific-Research Institute of Cotton Selection, Seeding, and Cultivation Agrotechnologies, alongside the Genomics and Bioinformatics Center, which evaluate the most suitable and high-yield cotton varieties for Uzbekistan's climate, forged local agreements.
These agreements pertain to the creation of hybrid cotton varieties based on the identified varieties and the establishment of a cotton seed breeding station. This cooperative effort is in conjunction with the Center of Agricultural Crops and Seed Science.
Furthermore, discussions were held with AGQ Labs International, a prominent Spanish company offering laboratory services in agriculture, food, environment, mining, and health. The capabilities of the company's state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and patented analysis methods were closely examined.
Following these negotiations, an initial understanding was reached for the establishment of a joint laboratory center in collaboration with the foreign party and Uzbekistan's scientific research institute of agricultural technologies of cotton selection, seeding, and cultivation.
Previously, the Cotton Campaign international coalition announced a boycott of Uzbek cotton for the deployment of child labor, unfair wages, and poor working conditions for cotton pickers. Later, the global boycott was lifted on March 10, 2022.
