Uzbekistan's Ministry of Justice on August 10 released a statement indicating that President Shavkat Mirziyoyev August 9 approved a new law that eliminates the previous mandatory requirement of having two years of experience before commencing legal practice.
Under the new legislation, individuals seeking to obtain a lawyer's license must complete a three-month internship at a law office, law firm, bar association, and must also pass a qualification exam.
This law has taken effect immediately upon its official publication.
Lawyers in Uzbekistan are divided into two categories: commercial lawyers and advocates. Both categories must adhere to a code of ethics that includes confidentiality, client loyalty, and avoiding conflicts of interest.
Commercial lawyers provide services subject to general civil and tax legislation, while the law regulates advocates' practices in legal profession.
