In a joint announcement on Instagram on August 2, Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, 51, and his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, 48, revealed their separation, ending their 18-year marriage, The Guardian reported. The couple married in late May 2005 and have three children: Xavier (15), Ella-Grace (14), and Hadrien (9).
The decision to separate came after "many meaningful and difficult conversations," and they have signed a legal agreement, according to the Prime Minister's office. Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, who had a high public profile, worked on causes including gender equality and mental health, and her involvement in public appearances reduced in recent years. She has two books due for publication.
Despite their separation, the couple remains focused on raising their children in a safe and loving environment. Trudeau's father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, was the first Canadian prime minister to become a single parent through separation in 1977, after separating from Margaret Trudeau. The details of Trudeau and Grégoire Trudeau's separation and custody agreement are yet to be made public.
While Justin Trudeau has followed his father's footsteps, serving as a Liberal MP and becoming the head of the government, his image has been somewhat tarnished since taking office in 2015 due to a series of scandals, inflation, and voter fatigue.
