A student from Uzbekistan, Gulnara Ivanova, has acquired the rights to adapt Stephen King's 1981 story "The Man Who Would Not Shake Hands," as per the report by the Tashkent branch of the Russian State University of Cinematography (VGIK).
Ivanova obtained the rights for a mere $1 under the Dollar Baby project and created a horror short film called "Touch." The film won the Best Thriller award at the Nitiin International Film Festival in Malaysia and was also recognized with a diploma from the Student World Impact Film Festival.
Now, with the support of Tashkent VGIK, Ivanova has completed her latest film, "Open Your Eyes"; the trailer has already been awarded Best Trailer at the Panama Series Festival in Panama.
The Dollar Baby program is a unique opportunity for students, aspiring filmmakers, and theater producers to adapt one of Stephen King's short stories at a nominal cost of $1. The program is designed to support and foster the next generation of creative individuals, and King retains all rights to his work. The term "Dollar Baby" can refer to the adaptation itself and the individual responsible for it. For instance, "The Sun Dog" was adapted by filmmaker Matt Flesher and he became a Dollar Baby in the process.
