The military junta's seizure of power in Niger has triggered a diplomatic and geopolitical crisis, with France being accused of plotting military intervention to reinstate the deposed President Mohamed Bazoum. The junta claims that France was seeking ways to intervene militarily in Niger and had even held meetings with Niger's national guard to obtain authorization for such action. However, the French foreign minister, Catherine Colonna, vehemently denied any intention of military intervention, emphasising the need to restore Niger's democratically elected president to power for stability in the region, The Guardian reported.
The coup in Niger has drawn international concern and condemnation, with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) giving the junta a week to return power to Bazoum or face potential forceful actions to restore constitutional order. France, the EU, and the US have either suspended support or threatened to do so, and Germany has suspended financial aid and development cooperation. UN humanitarian operations have been halted, and Russia has called for the swift return of the rule of law.
The situation in Niger adds to the complexities of France's strategy in the Sahel region, which has already been affected by military coups in other neighbouring countries. France's military presence and anti-jihadist mission have faced challenges, and the coup in Niger has raised questions about the effectiveness of security and military approaches in combating jihadist insurgency. The region's poor development, justice, and governance have also contributed to the mounting problems.
Earlier Daryo mentioned that following the military coup in Niger, President Mohamed Bazoum's government was swiftly overthrown, leading to widespread international condemnation. The country's new leader, General Abdourahamane Tiani, identified himself as the "President of the national council for the preservation of the homeland" on state televisi on on July 28.
