A fire broke out in a multi-story building in Almaty during the day, posing a significant threat to the residents, Gazeta.ru has reported.
The fire rapidly spread, engulfing the elevator shaft and electrical cables. In a panic, some residents resorted to desperate measures, throwing their children out of the windows before jumping themselves to escape the inferno.
Videos on social media captured the intense scene, with people on the ground using sheets and mattresses to catch those jumping from the building, primarily mothers trying to save their children.
The swift response of rescue teams enabled the evacuation of at least 290 people using ladders and other means. 16 minors were among the 31 individuals who received medical attention after the incident. By 19:00 local time, the fire was finally brought under control and extinguished, but not before it affected all 16 floors, including the electrical cables of the building. During the ordeal, approximately 300 people were evacuated, and 70 individuals were directly rescued from the flames, according to a statement from a representative of the emergency services.
