The Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) has taken significant steps in enhancing connectivity in the region under Kazakhstan's chairmanship. On July 28, Kazakh Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Kanat Tumysh and CICA Secretary General Kairat Sarybay signed a Roadmap for the Implementation of the Kazakh Chairmanship's Priorities for 2023-2024. This roadmap highlights the progress made in implementing activities aimed at strengthening connectivity in Asia.
The roadmap's contents reflect the initiatives proposed by president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev during the sixth CICA Summit in October 2022. One of the significant achievements is the establishment of the CICA Council on Sustainable Interconnectivity, which will play a crucial role in fostering sustainable and inclusive development across the region.
Furthermore, CICA has taken significant steps toward institutionalizing the CICA Finance Summit, which will help in facilitating financial cooperation and investment opportunities among member states. The upcoming 2024 CICA Environmental Conference is also in preparation, signaling the region's commitment to addressing pressing environmental challenges through collective efforts.
Another notable development is the creation of a partner network comprising leading universities from CICA member states. This network aims to promote academic cooperation and research exchange, fostering greater collaboration and understanding among educational institutions in the region.
In addition to these initiatives, CICA has shown support for volunteer movements within the region. By backing volunteer efforts, the organization aims to strengthen social engagement and community development, fostering a sense of unity and shared responsibility.
Kanat Tumysh, the Kazakh Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, underscored the importance of transforming CICA into an international organization. This transformation will elevate CICA's status and pave the way for more extensive and impactful collaboration among member states. Tumysh also emphasized the need to maintain effective interaction within the framework of the CICA governing and working bodies, ensuring that the organization's initiatives translate into tangible outcomes.
The Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) was established in 1992 as a multi-national forum aimed at promoting peace, security, and stability in Asia. With 28 member states, nine countries, and five international organizations holding observer status, CICA represents a diverse and influential platform for regional cooperation.
As Kazakhstan assumes the chairmanship of CICA, the country has demonstrated its commitment to fostering connectivity and cooperation in Asia. Through the roadmap's implementation, the organization aims to build stronger ties, address common challenges, and create an environment conducive to sustainable development and prosperity for all member states.
