In the long term, the world's second largest gas field, Galkynysh (Turkmenistan), could produce about 200bn cubic metres of gas a year, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reports.
The article said that in the long term, with the implementation of seven stages of its development, the annual production of the entire field will reach about 200bn cubic metres of natural gas.
Galkynysh is one of the main sources of supply to China and has the potential to become a feedstock base for the pipeline under construction to South Asia and the project under discussion to Europe via the Caspian Sea.
Its reserves, together with the Yashlar and Garakel fields, are estimated at almost 27tn cubic metres. This forecast was made with the participation of the British company GaffneyCline.
The state concern Turkmengaz is currently at the first stage of field development. CNPC (China), LG and Hyundai (South Korea), as well as Petrofac and Gulf Oil & Gas Fze (UAE) have been involved in its commercial development.
The 30bn cubic metres of gas per annum, $10bn project was implemented mainly through a loan from the China Development Bank. Work was completed in 2013, and seven years later the Turkmen government announced that it had fully repaid the loan.
Local experts told Daryo that as of the end of March 2022, the total volume of gas produced since the launch of the Galkynysh facilities was 132bn cubic metres.
