The World Kurash Championship, a national belt wrestling sport popular among Turkic peoples, is scheduled to be held in Ashgabat from 23 to 28 November 2023.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov instructed the State Committee for Physical Culture and Sport to coordinate this issue with the International Kurash Association (headquartered in Tashkent, Uzbekistan), local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports.
The competition will be held at a martial arts sports complex in the capital's Olympic City.
The sport is mentioned in the folk epics "Gerogly" and "Gorkut Ata". Men used to demonstrate their kurash wrestling skills at weddings, festivals and folk celebrations.
In 2003, Kurash was officially included in all continental games held in Asia. Work is currently underway to include kurash in the programme of the European Games, the Islamic Solidarity Games and the Olympic Games.
