The aftermath of the coup in Niger has led to a surge in anti-Western sentiments, particularly towards France, and a growing interest in Russia's involvement in the country, BBC reported on August 1. President Mohamed Bazoum, a staunch ally of the West in the fight against militant Islamists, was overthrown in the coup led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani on July 26. This has resulted in a display of Russian colours and flags in the streets, symbolising the shift in alliances and geopolitical dynamics.
The demonstrations in support of the military takeover and against French influence have spread across the country. Thousands of protestors participated in a protest in the capital Niamey, waving Russian flags and even attacking the French embassy. Similar sentiments were expressed in the central city of Zinder, where a pro-Russian businessman showcased his outfit in the colours of the Russian flag.
The situation in Niger is part of a wider trend across the Sahel and West Africa, where anti-French sentiment has grown due to the presence of French military forces and perceived inadequacies in countering Islamist militant attacks. Neighbouring countries like Mali and Burkina Faso, also former French colonies, have experienced similar dynamics, with Russia's Wagner Group gaining favour in Mali after French troops were forced out, and Burkina Faso expelling hundreds of French forces.
The M62 movement in Niger, formed by a coalition of activists, civil society movements, and trade unions, has been at the forefront of escalating anti-French protests since mid-2022, denouncing French forces' presence and raising concerns about the cost of living and governance issues. Following President Bazoum's removal, the M62 appears revitalised, advocating for the junta and denouncing sanctions by West African leaders over the coup.
The situation remains complex, with divided opinions on Russia's involvement. While some view Russia as a potential ally for security and agricultural improvements, others are sceptical and worry about the impact of external powers on their country's stability and sovereignty.
