The military coup in Niger that led to the toppling of President Mohamed Bazoum's government has garnered swift international condemnation. The country's new leader, General Abdourahamane Tiani, appeared on state television on July 28, identifying himself as the "President of the national council for the preservation of the homeland," CNN reported.
Tiani, the former head of the presidential guard, emerged as the leader after his soldiers confined Bazoum within his palace on July 26, causing uncertainty about the country's leadership.
On July 28, the general made a televised appearance with a banner declaring him as the president of the newly established military entity, the National Council for Safeguarding the Homeland (CNSP). "
The President of the CNSP is the head of state," Tiani said.
The coup has raised concerns about the stability and democracy in Niger, a country that has been seen as a rare democracy in the Sahel region, known for its frequent power grabs.
The coup leaders cited reasons for their actions, including the deteriorating security situation and poor economic and social governance under the former government. However, their actions have been met with disapproval and calls for President Bazoum's release from leaders around the world, including French President Emmanuel Macron and the European Union.
African nations, Western countries, regional, and international organisations expressed concern and urgency, demanding the release of Bazoum and the restoration of democracy. France, the former colonial ruler, reaffirmed its recognition of Bazoum as the rightful leader.
Amidst the disapproval, Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Wagner mercenary boss, was one of the few who welcomed the coup. He praised it as an uprising against colonial powers and offered the services of his fighters to restore order. Prigozhin's involvement is notable, considering his recent involvement in a failed mutiny against the Russian army's top brass, Reuters reported on July 28.
President Bazoum's whereabouts remain unknown, but he has received support from global leaders who have expressed solidarity and concern for his well-being. Despite the ongoing situation and uncertainty, the African Union and other allies of Niger have emphasised the importance of safeguarding democracy and freedom in the country.
