Turkmenistan is increasing maritime traffic, and in this connection the opening of a regular shipping line to Russia's Astrakhan region is being discussed, the "Accents" newspaper reports.
Ships built jointly could operate on the line. "Astrakhan shipbuilders have already built almost $800mn worth of ships for Turkmenistan, including drilling platforms."
There are plans to open a Turkmen logistics centre in the region.
The article mentions the fact that Turkmenistan may join the agreement on the North-South international transport corridor. "The Astrakhan region, the main 'gateway' for Turkmen transit to Russia, will benefit."
Turkmenistan actively co-operates with such Russian entities as St Petersburg, Tatarstan and Astrakhan. About 3,000 ethnic Turkmen live in the latter region, and more than 1,500 students from Turkmenistan study at its universities.
A representative of the transport sector told Daryo that a logistics centre is planned to open at the Astrakhan port in the Lotos special economic zone. Negotiations are underway. The project is seen as a platform for freight forwarding and transport companies with favourable customs, brokerage and warehousing services.
The parties are studying the possibility of opening a trading house in Astrakhan, which is interested in purchasing agricultural products, textiles and industrial goods from Turkmenistan.
The issue of opening a regular car ferry service on the line from Turkmenbashi port to Olya, a seaport in the Liman district of Astrakhan region, is being studied.
