Netanyahu receives emergency pacemaker, resolute on judicial overhaul despite protests

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was rushed to the hospital early on July 23 for an emergency procedure to receive a pacemaker. Despite the health setback, the leader vowed to continue with his controversial judicial overhaul plan, which has sparked widespread protests in the country.

In a brief videotaped statement released at 2 a.m., Netanyahu revealed that he had been fitted with a monitoring device after a brief hospitalization last week due to dehydration. However, a concerning alarm on the device sounded on July 22, prompting the need for immediate intervention with a pacemaker.

"I feel excellent, but I listen to my doctors," Netanyahu reassured the public, acknowledging the necessity of the medical intervention.

The Prime Minister's office released a statement indicating that Netanyahu would be placed under sedation during the procedure. In his absence, Justice Minister Yariv Levin, a key figure behind the controversial judicial overhaul plan, was set to assume temporary leadership.

The judicial overhaul plan proposed by Netanyahu has been the subject of vehement protests for months, with hundreds of thousands of citizens taking to the streets to express their opposition. On July 22 yet another massive demonstration occurred ahead of a critical parliamentary vote scheduled for July 24.

Despite his health condition, Netanyahu remains resolute in pushing forward with his agenda. He intends to receive the pacemaker at Israel's Sheba Hospital, the same medical facility where he was treated during his previous hospitalization.

Netanyahu expressed optimism about a quick recovery and his intention to leave the hospital on July 23, allowing him to attend the parliamentary session at the Knesset. During his statement, he also extended an olive branch to his opponents, hoping to reach an agreement that addresses concerns surrounding the controversial judicial reform.

A pacemaker is a medical device used to treat patients whose hearts beat too slowly, potentially leading to fainting spells or heart failure, according to the National Institutes of Health. By delivering electrical pulses to the heart, the pacemaker helps maintain or regulate the heartbeat at a normal rhythm, ensuring the heart functions optimally and pumps blood efficiently throughout the body.
