Turkmenistan plans to build a trade center in Dashoguz region, a border zone with Uzbekistan, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov instructed the Ministry of Trade and Foreign Economic Relations to conclude a contract for its construction with the condition of laying external utility systems for communications, electricity and water supply.
The project will be implemented within the framework of the Agreement between the governments of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan on the establishment and regulation of the Turkmen-Uzbek border trade zone signed on October 5, 2021.
According to the document, the border trade zone will cover the contiguous territory of the two countries - on the border of Dashoguz region of Turkmenistan and Khorezm region of Uzbekistan, near the border crossing point "Dashoguz-Shavat".
A modern infrastructure will be created here, including trade pavilions, storage facilities, container sites and places of work for entrepreneurs.
Local experts told Daryo that "Dashoguz-Shavat"opens up additional trade opportunities and could attract investors interested in setting up businesses in Central Asia.
A similar joint project in Lebap-Bukhara (Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan) is under study.
The 1,650-km border with Uzbekistan is the longest for Turkmenistan. Last year, mutual trade between the countries totaled $926.3mn, five times more than in 2017.
