President of South Korea's mother-in-law, Choe In-sun, was arrested on Friday after her appeal regarding document forgery in a land purchase deal was rejected by the court, Yonhap News has reported.
In December 2021, she was sentenced to one year in prison for the offense, but she was not arrested at that time. The appellate court found the 76-year-old woman guilty of creating a fake bank certificate, which was later used to purchase land in Sonnam City, south of Seoul, from April to October 2013. According to the forged document, she deposited around $27 mn into the account.
The court upheld the verdict due to the seriousness of the crime, and during the announcement, the woman lost consciousness.
It's worth noting that the document forgery case is not the only legal issue involving Choe In-sun. In December, she was acquitted in a case related to receiving benefits from state medical insurance after illegally operating a senior care hospital (originally, the court was set to sentence her to three years in prison). According to the charges, she unlawfully received benefits totaling $1.7 mn from the state medical insurance service until 2015.
