Uzbekistan's State Statistics Agency has updated the poverty line definition based on the minimum consumer expenditure.
The new figure is 568,000 (nearly $48.9) per person per month, a 14% increase from UZS 498,000 (nearly $42.8).
Reportedly, the minimum consumer spending was last updated on January 9, 2022, but since then, inflation has exceeded 16.1%, with food inflation reaching 20.3%.
A survey of 10,600 households in 2021 identified the lowest expenditure group, which was 30% of the households. Based on the survey data, the minimum daily consumption of food and non-food goods and services was UZS 498,000 (nearly $42.8) per person per month.
In 2022, the criterion for recognizing low-income families equalized minimum consumption expenditures in the "Unified Register of Social Protection."
Minimum consumption expenditure is often used to determine poverty thresholds, which helps target material and social assistance, establish the country's poverty threshold, and improve poverty reduction strategies and programs. It's also used to determine financial support for poor families.
