French shepherds are turning to the Pyrenean Mountain Dog, known as "patou," once again as the population of large predators, particularly gray wolves, grows.
In recent times, there has been a resurgence of interest in the local ancient breed of livestock guardian dogs, the Pyrenean Mountain Dog, or "patou," in France.
During the last century, their numbers dwindled along with the population of large predators.
However, now shepherds and farmers, especially in remote mountainous regions, are once again facing issues with wolves. The wolf population has sharply increased, posing a real threat to sheep.
As a result, shepherds are increasingly relying on patous to protect their flocks, just as they did centuries ago.
