The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $125 mn loan to enhance Uzbekistan's power transmission network, improve energy efficiency, and integrate more renewable energy sources into the country's energy balance. This was stated in a press release by the bank on July 10, Gazeta.uz has reported.
As part of the project "Digitization for Decarbonization - Power Transmission Network Improvement Project," 12 power transmission lines will be reconstructed in seven regions: Bukhara, Fergana, Kashkadarya, Samarkand, Surkhandarya, Navoi, and Tashkent. The total length of these lines is approximately 359 km. The project will also finance the reconstruction and modernization of four 220-kilovolt substations in Fayzabad, Obi-Khayot, Zarafshan, and Zaravshan to increase their capacity and meet current and projected energy demands.
"The project will help Uzbekistan meet the growing demand for reliable and affordable electricity while supporting the country's transition to a green and low-carbon economy. The modernization of the national grid will complement the efforts of the public and private sectors to expand renewable energy production and ensure better energy access for all," said ADB's Director-General for Central and West Asia, Eugene Zhukov.
The project will digitize the power transmission network by replacing outdated technologies with modern high-voltage lines and substations that are ready to be connected to a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system. This will enable remote management and real-time monitoring, as well as archiving of data, by the dispatch center.
The "National Electric Networks of Uzbekistan" company will be able to better manage power supply and increase the capacity for renewable energy generation in the grid.
