The 60-year-old governor of the Laghman province within the Taliban movement has reportedly entered into a marriage with an 18-year-old girl, as reported by Hasht-e Subh Daily.
Governor Zainul Abdin of Laghman province, affiliated with the Taliban movement, has reportedly married an 18-year-old girl by paying a significant amount of money. The wedding ceremony took place last Friday and aimed to rectify the official's previous misinformation.
The governor allegedly provided the girl's father with $9,357 and a plot of land in Sultan Ghazi Baba city as part of the marriage agreement. The total cost of the wedding surpassed $23,400. Additionally, it is stated that Zainul Abdin purchased gold for his young bride, amounting to $11,700.
It is important to note that forced marriage is prohibited in Afghanistan. The text also mentions an instance in which a 50-year-old man's attempt to forcibly marry a 12-year-old girl in the Imam Sahib district of Kunduz region was thwarted, emphasising the Taliban's commitment to enforcing the ban on forced marriages and holding those who violate it accountable.
The reported marriage between a 60-year-old governor and an 18-year-old girl raises concerns about power dynamics, consent, and the protection of young individuals in such unions. This case underscores the need for continued efforts to promote and enforce laws against forced marriages, ensuring the well-being and agency of individuals, particularly vulnerable and underage individuals, in Afghanistan.
