Kazakhstan plans to revise the agreement with Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan regarding the utilization of resources from the Syr Darya River basin by the end of 2023. This intention is outlined in Kazakhstan's water management concept for the period of 2023-2029, 24.kg reports.
The current agreement, which has been in effect since 1998, governs the allocation of water resources from the Syr Darya River for irrigation and energy purposes. It stipulates that excess electricity generated by hydroelectric power plants is supplied to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, while Kyrgyzstan receives energy resources, financial support, and commercial services from its neighboring countries.
Water scarcity poses a significant and escalating challenge in the region. Climate scientists predict that the strain on water resources will increase by 2.8 times in certain countries of the region by 2040. Moreover, by 2050, the Syr Darya River's water levels may decrease by up to 15%.
