During the 42nd plenary session of the Senate, the law concerning the ratification of the agreement between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan on the demarcation of their shared state border was deliberated and approved.
The agreement was signed by President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev during Tokayev's state visit to Uzbekistan on December 21, 2022.
The agreement specifies that the demarcated line of the state border between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan spans over 2,356km in length. This agreement marks the completion of the border establishment process between the two countries, ensuring the security and integrity of the border.
Senators emphasized that the ratification of this agreement will undoubtedly contribute to the strengthening and expansion of the multifaceted cooperative relations between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
The demarcation negotiations, which commenced in 2003, lasted for nearly 19 years, involving 100 meetings of the demarcation commission and 34 meetings of the working group on demarcation. In 2022, an agreement was finally reached on the demarcation of the state border between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, with fieldwork for the installation of border markers taking place from 2004 to 2021.
As a result of these demarcation efforts, a 2,356-km border has been established between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, with the placement of 1,301 border markers.
