Residents of the Arganzuela district in Madrid took to the streets in protest against the felling of trees, Euronews reports.
The authorities plan to construct a new metro line here, which would involve cutting down over a thousand trees. Around a hundred of these trees, tall and sturdy as four-story buildings, are set to be felled specifically in the vicinity of Ankara Street.
"We are not against the metro line, but not at the cost of our trees. We don't want them to cut down our trees," - said a resident of the Candela neighborhood.
"This is Spain, not a Scandinavian country. In June, it is impossible to be under the sun at 11 in the morning here. We don't know if they have taken into consideration what it means for people to lose the shade they have in Madrid Rio Park," - noted Maximó Florin, a technical advisor to the protesters.
In response to the protests, the authorities in Madrid have promised to halt the project and propose an alternative solution.
