India's finance minister has criticized former US President Barack Obama for his remarks about protecting the rights of India's Muslim minority, Al-Arabiya reports.
During Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to the US, Obama suggested that the issue of safeguarding India's Muslim minority should be raised during Modi's meeting with the US president.
In response, the finance minister accused Obama of hypocrisy and questioned why anyone should pay attention to his statements. The minister emphasized the desire for friendly relations with the USA but expressed surprise at Obama's comments, referencing the military actions carried out during his presidency in six Muslim-majority countries.
The US State Department has previously expressed concern about the treatment of Muslims and other religious minorities in India under the ruling Hindu nationalist party led by Modi. The Indian government, on the other hand, has emphasized the importance of treating all citizens equally.
During their meeting at the White House, President Joe Biden stated that he and Modi discussed human rights and democratic values. In a joint news conference, Modi denied allegations of discrimination against minorities under his government.
