June 27 marks Press and Media Workers Day in Uzbekistan.
Over the past seven years, the Central Asian country has made significant progress in press freedom, rising 29 positions in the World Press Freedom Index.
Official data shows a 41% increase in registered media from 2016 to 2023, with 2,140 media outlets reported in 2023 compared to 1,514 in 2016.
The number of magazines has doubled during this period, from 309 in 2016 to 623 in 2023, and there has been an 88% increase in registered online editions from 395 in 2016 to 745 in 2023.
In May, the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, recognized the media as a crucial channel for conveying the voice and opinions of the people to the general public and state authorities.
The President emphasized the importance of upholding a policy of openness in society by guaranteeing freedom of the media and the right to receive, use, and disseminate information.
Shavkat Mirziyoyev has also underscored the importance of prioritizing the progress of civil society institutions through greater engagement of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and safeguarding their rights and privileges.
