The United Nations has blamed Russia for the deaths of 136 children in Ukraine, as well as assaults on 480 Ukrainian schools and hospitals in 2022. The Russian military forces were named on the so-called "list of shame," a list of children's rights abusers during the war.
The United Nations has issued a new study on children in war zones to members of the Security Council, which Reuters has examined on June 22. It will be formally launched the following week.
The UN informs that the Russian military killed 136 children, wounded 518 others, and used 91 youngsters as human shields.
The study shows that the UN is also worried about the Armed forces of Ukraine's huge number of violations against children. It alleges that as a result of Ukrainian military activities, 80 children were murdered and 175 were wounded.
"The Security Council not only no longer represents the world, but it is frequently paralyzed, as in the case of the Ukrainian conflict. Even numerous groupings and platforms outside the multilateral system, such as the G20, get caught up in similar disputes. The world cannot go on like this," UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated.
The yearly report on children and armed conflict by Guterres to the 15-member Security Council includes the killing, maiming, sexual assault, kidnapping or recruiting of minors, denial of assistance access, and targeting of schools and hospitals.
Virginia Gamba, Guterres' special representative for children and armed conflict, produced the study.
Gamba visited Ukraine and Russia in May, where she met with Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia's advocate for children's rights, whom the International Criminal Court wants to arrest on war crimes accusations.
The International Criminal Court issued an arrest order for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Lvova-Belova in March of 2023, charging them of illicitly deporting children from Ukraine and illegally transferring people from Ukraine to Russia since Russia invaded on February 24, 2022.
